Meet Mia…Patient Ambassador at Cook Children’s

When 6-year-old Mia began experiencing rapid weight loss, her mom, Amanda, took her to her pediatrician. When Mia’s test results came in, Amanda received a call asking her to take Mia to Cook Children’s immediately. Mia was experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis, a life-threatening condition that develops when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin. She was admitted to our medical center, and later diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

“It was very scary, but everyone was so wonderful and helpful, and we felt good about where we were going from there,” Amanda said.

Thanks to the help of the Endocrinology team, Mia’s parents learned how to manage her care through carb counting and insulin administration. Mia even learned to give herself insulin shots just three months after her diagnosis. She has learned about food and nutrition and says she wants to be a diabetic nurse or diabetic educator when she grows up.

A little over a year after her initial diagnosis, Mia became a patient ambassador for Cook Children’s and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. She proudly shares her story with others in hopes of bringing awareness to her condition and other kids at local children’s hospitals.
