When Gunner was diagnosed with Pompe disease, Erin, a Cook Children’s Child Life specialist, created an opportunity for his mother, Audra, to fully experience her emotions before sharing the news with her son.

“On the day he was diagnosed, she took him to play Uno so he wasn’t in the room when we were told,” Audra said. “I had to compose myself before we left, so I could explain everything to him.”
